Nickel Diner

524 South Main Street
Los Angeles, California 90013

8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday (breakfast and lunch)
6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday (dinner)

I’ve been wanting to go to Nickel Diner ever since I tried a slice of their Salt Peanut Cake that a friend brought to work to celebrate a co-worker’s birthday.

My foodie friend, Stephanie, and I finally made it over for breakfast on a Saturday.

We started off with the Maple Bacon Donut, top, and a homemade pumpkin pop-tart, below.

Both were delicious. Some have even called the donut “pastry perfection”. It is tasty and I know it’s a hot seller. So if you’d like to try one get there in the morning because I’ve heard they sell out by afternoon.

But for me the tender pastry on the pop tart with its scrumptious, spicy pumpkin filling quickly outpaced the donut in terms of taste & texture.

After all that I decided to have lunch instead of breakfast. I went with the Lowrider Burger, above, with chiles, pepperjack cheese, onions, lettuce and a spicy aioli. The thick, juicy patty and crispy shoestring fries were the highlight of the dish.

Steph had the Huevos Rancheros, below, which had two eggs on tortillas with beans, pepperjack cheese, avocado, salsa with a smooth Mexican creamy sauce.

I had heard that parking was impossible and the wait was terrible. We got there at about 11 and found metered parking a few steps away from the diner.

And because of my smart friend who called the diner 30 minutes before arriving to be put in the list there was no wait for a table either!

It was a great time with a friend and some delicious food!
