Toor Dal

From Mom’s Kitchen: This is another recipe passed down from my Mom: Sunita Swaroop. She is one of the best cooks I know and I am so happy I have some of her recipes here for me!

What you need:
4 cups of Toor dal
1 teaspoon of coriander + cumin mix
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of mango powder
1/2 teaspoon each of turmeric and chili powder
Salt to taste

Tarka:
1 onion, chopped
1/2 cup oil + 2 tablespoons oil
1/4 of butter stick
1/2 cup diced garlic
1/2 teaspoon chili powder

What you do:
Making the dal:
1. Soak 4 cups of Toor dal overnight
2. Rinse it in the morning and add clean water with dal.
3. Pour 1/2 fingers worth of lukewarm water into the slow cooker.
4. Turn it on wait for the water to heat up until its almost boiling.
5. When the water is almost boiling, add dal. Make sure the water remains at the same 1/2 finger level.
6. Add turmeric, chili powder, garlic powder, coriander+cumin powder, sea salt.

Making the Tarka :
1. Cook the onions in a pan with butter & oil until brown. Set aside to use as garnish.
2. In a small pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil and the chopped garlic.

3. Cook until garlic is golden brown. About a minute after it begins to turn golden add
4. Add chili powder and cook about 30 seconds. Remove from heat.20121227-155906.jpg
5. Add Tarka to dal. Mix in.
